Cougars accept invite to run in EUP meet in Naubinway Byline: John Vrancic

NAUBINWAY — Superior Central is not a member of the Eastern U.P. Conference.

Host Engadine, however, extended an invitational to the Cougars for Monday’s opening leg of the EUP Jamboree and they were more than willing to accept.

“This is a beautiful day and a nice course,” Cougars’ coach Holly McDonald said. “We’re going to run the U.P. (Division 3) Finals on a golf course (at Munising). This is good practice for the Finals. It’s nice to be able to run a different course.”

The Rudyard girls won with 59 points, followed by Newberry 76 and Pickford 83.

Rudyard’s boys also won with 43 points, followed by Engadine 75 and St. Ignace 85.

Pickford senior Talya Schreiber was the individual winner of the girls’ race, covering the 3.1-mile course here in 18:12 on this sunny and warm afternoon on the Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club Golf Course.

She was followed by Newberry senior Samantha Taylor (18:32), sophomore teammate Molly McNamara (20:41) and junior Abby Taylor (20:52).

Superior Central sophomore Kendra Pederson placed 11th (24:00) and Meridith Kemper took 21st (25:23).

“That’s not my best time, but I’m happy with how the race went,” Pederson said. “The course is okay. I’m glad it was flat. This is kind of a tune-up for Escanaba (Thursday’s Invite). This is my first year doing cross country. I had a slow start to this season, but I’ve come a long way from the beginning of the season. This gives me confidence for the rest of the season. This has been a learning experience.”

Cedarville-DeTour junior Ethan Snyder won the boys’ race at 17:23, followed by Rudyard senior Steven Kirschner (17:40) and Engadine sophomore Nate Stielstra (18:14).

Superior Central senior Cody Moore took 19th (19:41). Classmate Carter Korpi was 22nd (20:10) with Cole Ozoga 25th (20:26).

After Thursday’s Esky Invite, the Cougars host the Skyline Central Conference meet Oct. 8.
