Rebuttal: The myths about unions

The glowing praise of unions in a letter published Aug. 30 overlooks what unions have become in modern America. A century ago, unions may have served a purpose in pushing for basic workplace safety. But today they operate more like political machines and extortion rackets than advocates for workers. The reality is clear: unions drive inflation. When they demand wage hikes far above market value, businesses pass the costs onto consumers through higher prices. Don’t privatize regional mental health entities

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is proposing to open oversight of Community Mental Health Agencies to private corporations. Under this plan, outside companies — many based beyond Michigan — could “bid” on the work currently carried out by the state’s ten Regional Entities. These Regional Entities play a critical role: they receive state funding, allocate it to 46 Community Mental Health agencies, and attempt to provide oversight. Delta Airlines is reliable

Kudos to Gilbert Cheves' letter to the editor Wednesday, Aug. 13. He nailed it on the head. Why was no public input provided to allow we the citizens of Delta County to express a preference as to which airline carrier should serve our local airport? Delta Airlines by far has the best scheduling and reliability. To go with higher-cost Denver Air Connection and LESS reliable scheduling would be a major mistake. The ill-advised, and non-public action taken by the Airport Board must be revisited and then rescinded.

Faults county board’s actions

This letter is about the editorial (July 21) titled “Government doesn’t work without citizen participation.” Stated “that in small-town America, governance requires participation, collaboration and a variety of viewpoints to get the job done.” I can’t agree more. But in Delta County we have county commissioners who either drive out individuals on citizen boards/commissions and/or employees. Why?
