Democracy threatened by dark chapter

Letter to the editor

I have followed politics most of my adult life. Sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised by what they have completed, but more often disappointed. However, I never thought that our democracy itself was threatened until now.

President Donald Trump claims he doesn’t know if he must follow the Constitution. He acts and behaves like a fascist dictator. No one in his Cabinet of sycophants will stand up to him. They are afraid.

He believes that he has the authority to schedule tariffs on imported goods from all countries without any input from Congress. Then he states that foreign governments are paying tariffs, which is fundamentally not true. The importer pays the tariff and passes that cost onto the buyers of the goods, the citizens of our country.

He believes he has the power to authorize an attack on speed boats in international waters and kill the occupants because he thinks they might be importing drugs.

In Minneapolis/St. Paul, his government agency, the Department of Homeland Security, ICE agents grab people off the street or from their cars to interrogate them based mostly on their skin color. These agents wear face masks and carry weapons of war. They are terrorizing the citizens of the Twin Cities.

On Jan. 7 they shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old white woman, mother of three and a poet. On Jan. 24 they shot Alex Pretti 10 times. He was an ICU nurse at a local Veterans Hospital. Neither one of these victims posed a threat. They were protesting the actions of the federal agents, and for this they were murdered. There are videos showing the criminal acts by the government thugs.

A reporter recently asked Trump what or who restricts whatever action that he takes. His answer was his brain and his morality. That’s frightening. He is deficient in both.

Our country is sleepwalking toward a dark chapter in our history.
