Thanking the Friends of the Escanaba library
Letter to the Editor
As we celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week from Oct. 19-25, I’d like to take a moment to recognize and thank the Friends of the Escanaba Public Library — a dedicated group of volunteers who have supported and enhanced our library since 1988.
The Friends are your neighbors — people who believe in the power of a good library and generously give their time and resources to make ours even better. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they raise funds through book sales, memorial donations, and contributions, helping the library offer programs and services that go far beyond what the budget allows.
Thanks to their efforts, the library has been able to:
— Host the beloved Live on the Lawn summer concert series;
— Launch the bookmobile and mobile outreach service;
— Restore drive-up service via the drive-up window;
— Support digital learning with new computers and online tools like Mango Languages and Ancestry Library;
— Digitize local historical newspapers;
— Sponsor children’s and adult reading programs, student book clubs, and the Lego Club;
— Enhance technology access, including wireless printing and color copies; and
— Promote arts, culture and wellness through author talks, health classes and more.
During National Friends Week, members of the Friends will be at the library to share information and welcome new members. If you’ve attended the annual Ice Cream Social or an outdoor concert, you’ve already seen a glimpse of their impact — but there’s much more happening behind the scenes.
Please join me in expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Friends of the Escanaba Public Library. Their commitment ensures that our library remains a vibrant space for education, exploration, and community connection.
