Firearms law

EDITOR:

Sadly, it didn’t take long to see a demonstration of the impotence of Governor Whitmer’s gun storage law. A two-year-old child was killed through the negligence of her father (law or not) regarding access to a loaded firearm. Two articles in the Daily Press and other sources provide similar accounts, but also leave out vital information.

Not only do gun control laws not prevent the crimes for which they are written (as is so plainly demonstrated here), but pre-existing laws (felonies) were violated earlier in this case. The Feb 22 article noted “(the father)… also faces one count each of felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, lying to a police officer… and four counts of felony firearm…” How many violations of existing laws regarding felons and firearms were there in this case? All of them are further examples of the futility of adding more unenforced/able legislation.

Instead of taking measures to ensure that felons do not remain in possession of firearms, Whitmer passes legislation to prevent the honest transfer of firearms between family members and requires their registration. Her intent seems to “make inert” through storage or lock prevents the ordinary law-abiding citizen quick and easy access to firearms for defense or convenience. The admonition to diligently monitor loaded firearms and ammunition (as the owner does/ in their best interest) and the years-old public-service-messages to store guns and ammo safely have now become felonies. These safety practices are part of basic NRA training – banned in schools.

The disgusting “Woke” excuse that pursuing the law regarding felons in possession somehow violates a person’s Second Amendment rights, or rights to privacy and possession (search and seizure) are truly vile misinterpretations of rights, but typical of left-wing logic. These are the same excuses they use to promote police reductions, citizenship requirements for voting and blind-eyes to retail crimes. One wonders if the father in this case would have attracted more attention if he had used the wrong pronoun prior to this.

The child’s death is tragic, but its avoidance went far back before violation of current law. This person should not have been able to possess a firearm or ammunition. Why were the illegal acquisitions not caught by the existing volumes of firearms laws? Illegal possession/storage will not be stopped via laws, but education would go a long way to reinforcing existing safe storage practices. Why is this not promoted? Early instruction would be indicated to create a safer society, but the introduction of safety practices are not allowed in schools and not sanctioned for presentation by extracurricular programs. Whose fault is this?

Ignoring the consequences of proper education, and placing blame and onus on safety-minded, lawful gun owners is responsible in very large part to the failure of impotent legislation.

Democrats, you own this and will continue to do so until you recognize the fallacy of the legislation and regulation you propose.
