Spending concerns

EDITOR:

During the election season, Commissioner Moyle was questioned on his lack of attendance. He repeatedly stated on social media he was not attending his monthly board/committee assignments because each time he did, he was paid a stipend ($20-$45 I believe) and in the best interest of the county he did not go because he wanted to save taxpayers money and he could just be informed via email what had been discussed. He also made insinuations on social media if he won re-election he wanted the stipend gone because some commissioners were making a lot of money off it.

After winning re-election (although not obtaining 50% of the vote — meaning more people in his district voted against him rather than for him), he was appointed board chair in the first meeting. During this first meeting, Moyle gave no indication of the stipend removal. The meeting was one violation of Roberts Rules of Order after another. Also at that meeting was a violation of the Open Meetings Act, which if brought to proper enforcement, could cost the county $500-$1,000 and is a misdemeanor.

At the second meeting of the commissioners, Commissioner Moyle and his fellow commissioners approved spending $3,000 for a one time visit from an attorney to discuss, among other varying topics, how to run meetings, how to follow proper procedure, etc. A 12 year veteran commissioner who tried to save the county $20 by not attending meetings is now in favor of paying $3,000 to learn how to conduct meetings.

In public comment, former Commissioner Johnson suggested not spending $3,000 when there are other free sources available. For anyone interested, Roberts Rules of Order can be purchased for around $15 and also all info is on the State of Michigan website.
