Marilyn Van Elsacker
NORTHLAND — Marilyn Van Elsacker, 75, of Northland, Michigan, passed away on November 14, 2025 at home, surrounded by family. She was born on September 21, 1950, the first child of William and Lenore Usher of Watson, Michigan.
Marilyn grew up loving horses and was hired by an Abarian Horse Farm in Brighton, Michigan shortly after high school graduation. She trained and showed their horses winning many ribbons and trophies. When she returned to Watson, she became head Sawyer at Usher’s Sawmill, until she retired due to health issues.
Marilyn married Dennis Van Elsacker in 1982 and together they purchased the Allen family farm in Northland, establishing the Cripple Creek Land and Cattle Company. They raised long horn, and red angus cattle for breeding stock. Marilyn was the full-time herdsman, and together they raised top of the line stock.
Woodworking was one of Marilyn’s hobbies. She spent many hours with Grandpa Ted Peippo learning how to make cutting boards, clocks, cedar chests, and chairs for her favorite front porch. Many family members have something she crafted for them.
Trail riding was another hobby she enjoyed. She drove her pickup and horse trailer to numerous trails around the area, sometimes hauling up to 7 horses. The trail ride of a lifetime happened in 2004 when she got to go to Wyoming and ride in the Rocky Mountains.
Anyone who knew Marilyn, knew she was an avid reader, honest, a loyal friend, tough as nails, and someone who never complained in-spite of her many health challenges.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dennis Van Elsacker, mother Lenore Usher, brother Terry (Denise) Usher, Janet (Gary) Gazan, Mike (Lisa) Usher, Cindy (Bob) Stevens, step-daughters Jenny (Greg Chaudier) Billie Jean (Fritz) Horrocks, grandchildren Arik,(Kamae) Alex and Cassidy Anderson,4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, dear friend Terri Reid, along with her special Border Collie, Tinky.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her father William, grandparents Ted and Mamie Peippo, and Bob and Helen Usher.
In keeping with Marilyn’s nature of “never wanting to be the center of attention”. There will be no funeral service, as we honor her wishes. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Van Elsacker family and you may send condolences to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
