William James McCarthy
ELKTON, Md. — William James McCarthy, 104, of Elkton, MD, passed away on September 28, 2023. Born in Escanaba, Mich. on September 16, 1919. He was the son of the late John Joseph and Laura Quinn McCarthy.
A World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran, Mr. McCarthy retired after 38 years as the Chief of Supply Service for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, having worked for Perry Point VA Hospital, Perryville, MD and Iron Mountain VA Hospital, Iron Mountain, Mich. He had served on the board of directors for 10 years for Union Hospital. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2427, American Legion Post 135 of Perryville, and the Elks. In his spare time, Mr. McCarthy enjoyed golfing, gardening, playing cards and was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Tigers.
Survivors include his children, JoAnn Fay (Ivan), Green Bay, Wis., William McCarthy, Jr. (Lorraine), Hertford, N.C., Paul McCarthy (Debra), Elkton, MD, Mary Beth Hasson (Craig), Columbia, MD, Matthew McCarthy (Amy), Chocowinity, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 77 years, Amee I. McCarthy; siblings, Margaret Laverne Douck (Carroll), John Michael McCarthy (Helen), Marianne Utt (Lyle), Laura Koch (Earl), and Edward Q. McCarthy (Patricia).
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, October 6, at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. in the Church Chapel. Interment with military honors held in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Cherry Hill, MD
