Lucy Ellen (Skaggs) Olsen

HOLLAND — Lucy Ellen (Skaggs) Olsen, 93, went to be with our Lord and Savior on September 9, 2023. She was at home surrounded by her loving family.

Lucy was born June 1, 1930 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Lewis and Effie (Lyon) Skaggs. She grew up in Portsmouth and graduated in Wheelersburg, Ohio in 1949.

After high school, she married Donald M. Olsen on February 18, 1950. They lived in Portsmouth with their first three children before moving the family to Michigan. They had five more children while living in Taylor, then moved to Gladstone in 1973. She was a homemaker and while raising her eight children she was involved in the church Jaycettes, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, was a scout leader with all her children’s troops, and volunteered at their schools.

Lucy enjoyed cooking, baking, cake decorating, canning, gardening, sewing, knitting, quilting, ceramics, playing cards and hosting parties. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and being where they needed her most. She loved to be there to support and love on them, and to teach them all how to cook, bake, sew, knit, quilt and play cards.

Anyone who met her felt her love and kindness. She will be missed by all.

She is survived by her children, Christine Fleury, Patricia Simpson, David (Karen) Olsen, Mary (Larry) La Pree, Ramona (Donald) Brandt, Marge Metcalf, Thor Olsen, and Leif (Mari) Olsen; 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Delphia (Frank) Doleman and David Skaggs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, sister Betty, three brothers, Walter, Denny, and Glynn.

A private burial will take place in Virginia where Lucy will be laid to rest with her family.
