Richard E. Nelson

ESCANABA — Richard E. Nelson, 94, of Escanaba, passed away Thursday evening, June 15, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on September 21, 1928 in Escanaba, son of Ewald R. and Catherine J. (Gafner) Nelson. Richard graduated from Escanaba High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne until his honorable discharge in 1948. He received a World War II Victory Medal. He then attended Michigan State University.

On September 13, 1952, Richard married the former Elaine J. Beck in Escanaba.

Richard worked for Mead Paper for 38 years, serving in a number of finance and purchasing roles.

He enjoyed golf and was a member of both Highland Golf Club and Escanaba Country Club. He was active in bowling, baseball and softball in his younger adult years. He also loved ice fishing and continued to brave the ice up until he turned 90 years old.

He was a life-long member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a council member.

Among survivors are his wife, Elaine Nelson; son, Barry (Kelcey) Nelson of Cincinnati, Ohio; and grandchildren, Gunnar of Nashville, Tenn., Darby of Winchester, Virginia, and Delaney of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Becky Moss.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 2 at 11 a.m. at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 615 S. 30th St., Escanaba, with Pastor Paul Doletzky officiating. A meal will immediately follow in the church hall.
