Raymond A. Nelson

ROCK — Raymond A. Nelson, age 83, of Rock, Mich., passed away Friday, April 1, 2022 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on May 20, 1938 in Wells Township, Mich, the son of Oscar and Lilly (Alhquist) Nelson. Raymond attended and graduated from Perkins High School in 1956 where he played and excelled at basketball. Following graduation, he worked in the woods along with trucking until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country for two years until Raymond was honorably discharged. He then moved to Milwaukee, Wis. for employment where he met his wife, and married the former Patricia Hinrichs on March 26, 1966 in Red Lake Falls, Minn. She preceded him in death on June 30, 2016 and together they shared 50 years of marriage and raised two children, Debra and Guy. The family lived in various locations in Lower Michigan before relocating to the Rock and Perkins area in 1976. Raymond was employed with A. Lindberg Construction and traveled throughout Michigan working on projects until his retirement in 2000. Raymond loved everything about being in the woods and the outdoors. Even when not working his construction job, he was building roads on his property in Rock. He always made sure there was firewood ready to keep the house warm and was a busy body who took care of everything around the house. In his later years, Raymond enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and reading books — especially by authors Garrison Keillor, John Grisham, Louis L’Amour, Jonas Jonasson, or any World War II book.

Raymond is survived by his daughter, Debra (Ralph) Prescott of Augusta, Ga.; son, Guy (Mary Jane) Nelson of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Eileen Demuse of Gladstone; sister-in-law, Jane Nelson of Perkins; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, Raymond was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernie, Dennis, and John Nelson.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Perkins. Funeral services celebrating the life of Raymond will follow at 3 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Diane Srutowski officiating. Burial will take place in the Perkins Cemetery.
