ESCANABA — Richard George Hentz, age 92, of Escanaba, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 6, 2021, at North Woods Place in Escanaba. He was born on February 12, 1929, in Escanaba, the son of George and Nina (Johnson) Hentz. Richard was raised and attended school in Escanaba and was a graduate of Escanaba High School. He went on to further his education at Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1953 and served his country until his was honorably discharged in August of 1955. Richard married the former Viola Marie Kurth on May 10, 1958, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Escanaba, and she preceded him in death on January 10, 1965. Richard was employed by Mead Paper Company in Escanaba as a welder and knife cutter for 40 years until his retirement in 1991. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Escanaba, past member of the 55 Plus Club at 1st National Bank and the Horizon Club at U.P. State Bank, and part of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). He greatly enjoyed traveling to various places and spending time outdoors – especially walking, biking, hunting, and woodworking.

Richard G. Hentz is survived by his son, Richard (Carol) Hentz, Jr. of Green Bay, Wis.; daughters, Tammy Fleury of Escanaba, Debra Hentz of Escanaba, Gayle (Dwayne) Noel of Cornell, and Karen Fleury of Escanaba; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; sister, Inez Mattson of Escanaba; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by his son, Glenn Hentz on December 26, 2020.

A public visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be conducted at the conclusion of the visitation at 5 p.m., Tuesday. Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery.
