Charles ‘Chuck’ Makosky Jr.

GLADSTONE, Mich. — Charles “Chuck” Makosky Jr., age 94, of Gladstone, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2020, at U.P. Health System in Marquette.

Chuck was born May 29, 1926, in Escanaba, the son of Charles Sr. and Barbara (Lehman) Makosky. He was raised in Riverland and was a graduate of Escanaba Senior High School.

On June 23, 1944, Chuck enlisted in the United States Army where he served during World War II until his honorable discharge in April of 1946. While in service, Chuck received medals of commendation which included, the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, one Overseas Service Bar, the Good Conduct Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.

On August 17, 1946, shortly after returning home, Chuck was united in marriage to the former Marcella Young and together the couple made their home and raised their family in Gladstone.

Chuck was employed driving truck for Theisen-Clemens Oil Company for 29 years. He then went on to work for the Gladstone Power Plant until his retirement.

Chuck enjoyed hunting, playing Thursday night smear league at All Saints Church, bowling and having morning coffee with friends and family at the “round table”.

One of the highlights of Chuck’s life was attending the 2nd annual U.P. Honor Flight to Washington D.C. It was a touching moment in his life and he would often tell stories of how impressed he was by the trip.

In addition to his loving wife of 74 years, Marcella, Chuck survived by: son, Tom (Terri) Makosky and their children Roy (Amanda), Mary, Sara, Marayha (Nate), Sam (Megan), Peter, Shay, Brittney (Kyle), Cody, Marlene and Emily; daughter, Marilee (Mark) Demarse and their children Katie and Kelsey. Also surviving are numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Sr. and Barbara; brothers,: Gene, John, Robert and Harold; sisters, Elsie, Emily, Lillian and Shirley.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 5:45 p.m. at the Salem Evangelical Church in Escanaba. Military rites by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71 will be conducted at 5:45 p.m.

Funeral service to celebrate the life of Charles A. Makosky will follow visiting hours at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Escanaba with Pastor Paul Doletzky officiating.

Chuck will be laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting with arrangements. Messages of condolence may be offered at www.skradskifuneralhomes.com
