Joseph ‘Joe’ L. Anderson

GLADSTONE — Joseph “Joe” L. Anderson, 77, of Gladstone, passed away Tuesday evening, March 31, 2020, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on May 29, 1942, in Escanaba, the son of Chester and Gladys (Frizzell) Anderson. Joe was raised in Escanaba and was a graduate of Escanaba High School with the Class of 1960. Following graduation, he worked at Delta Nursing Home for a few years. Joe married the former Joanne Clairmont on June 1, 1963, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Escanaba. Together, the couple shared nearly 57 years of marriage and raised three children, Jim, Jeff, and Jill. Joe was employed at Mead Paper Company where he worked in the storeroom for 37 years until his retirement on April 1, 2002. He has greatly enjoyed the past 18 years of his retirement. Joe enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, bowling, and rooting for his beloved Green Bay Packers. His love of football led to being in charge of a local football pool for 30 years. A wonderful accomplishment of Joe and Joanne is they have also walked the Mackinac Bridge 15 times since 1999. Joe was never one to sit still, was always on the move, and was everyone’s handyman. Joe volunteered with NOVA, was a Big Brother in Big Brothers Big Sisters, was a member of the Wells Lions Club, and a member of the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone.

Joseph L. Anderson is survived by his wife, Joanne Anderson of Gladstone; children, Jim (Shelly) Anderson of Escanaba, Jeff (Charlotte) Anderson of Gladstone, and Jill Anderson (Mark Morgan) of Wells; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Dan) Demeuse of Escanaba; three sisters-in-law, Marylee Buckland of Escanaba, Kathleen (Dennis) Porath of Escanaba, and Sue Flodin of Grand Rapids, Mich.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Gasman, Delores Trattles, and Betty St. Ours.

Private family visitation and funeral services will be held Friday, April 3, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba with Pastor Aaron Anderson of United Evangelical Covenant Church officiating.
