Mary Jean Bernier

SARATOGA SPRINGS N.Y. — Mary Jean Bernier,92, of Garden, passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2018 at Saratoga Hospital Hospice in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., with her loving family by her side.

She was born Dec. 1, 1926 in Garden to Robert and Edna (Boudreau) Lester. Mary Jean attended and graduated from Garden High School.

She married the love of her life Gerard Bernier on Aug. 30, 1947 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden where they made their home. Together they raised two children.

She worked for the U.S. Postal service for many years until her retirement.

Mary loved to craft and give away her many projects, especially afghans. Mary was always taking someone soup or cookies and made the best homemade bread for her family. She was a caregiver for several older relatives. Mary was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Church and was a very supportive of its projects.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Darrel) LaVigne, of New York; son, Peter Bernier of Minnesota; grandchildren, Alicia Fuss of New York, Adam (Trisha) LaVigne of New York; great-grandchildren, Stephen Lavigne of Rhode Island, Amelia and Elliott Fuss of New York; sister, Faith Clement of Garden City, Mich., and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Jean is preceded in death by her loving husband; siblings, Janet Ralph, John Lester, Ann Cyrowski and Joyce Zajac.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at St. John the Baptist Church in Garden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Father Jamie Ziminski officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in New Garden Cemetery in Garden Township.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or to St. John the Baptist Church in Garden.
