Kevin J. Viau

ESCANABA — Kevin J. Viau, 40 of Escanaba, passed away at his home on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 following a lengthy illness with traumatic syringomyelia.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1977 in Escanaba, a son of Keith and Alice (VanAcker) Viau. Kevin graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1996.

During Kevin’s younger years he was passionate about BMX racing. He loved to hunt and would often head out fishing for the day always packing his pickle, cheese and bologna sandwich. Things changed for Kevin during high school when he was involved in a car accident which resulted in him having a broken neck. His health declined and a cyst in his spinal cord was detected, causing his life to change from this disease and the chronic pain that was associated with it.

His love for the outdoors continued through his life and he loved to go to camp with his dad and hunt when he was able.

He was passionate about classic cars, owning a 1968 Classic Camaro.

Kevin enjoyed helping people and always listened to troubled souls. While he was attending a six-week pain clinic at Mayo Clinic, others were always drawn to him. This always led Kevin to dream of an opportunity of furthering his education and having a career in counseling.

Kevin enjoyed the opportunity of being involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program as a big brother and he was involved as long as his health allowed.

Among survivors are his parents, Keith and Alice Viau of Escanaba; brother, Jon (Dimas) Viau of Escanaba; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Virginia VanAcker and Edwin and Agnes Viau; and his Alaskan Malamute, Thor.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the Viau family to assist with the funeral expenses, c/o Crawford Funeral Homes, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba, MI 49829.
