Wesley Henry Turan

MANISTIQUE — Wesley Henry Turan, 80, of Manistique, Mich., passed away on Sept. 21, 2018, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Escanaba, Mich., the son of Henry and Myrle (Peterson) Turan and attended school in Nahma. He was a graduate of Nahma High School with the Class of 1956.

Wes was employed as a millwright with Manistique Papers, Inc. for several years, retiring after 40 years of service.

On June 21, 1958, he married the former Arleen J. Matthews in Manistique, Mich.., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique.

Wes was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique, the Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree, and past Grand Knight of the third degree. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 44 and was actively involved as a volunteer with the Manistique Senior Center.

He and Arleen enjoyed Tea Cuples square dancing for over 20 years. Wes also enjoyed camping with family, hunting, cross country skiing, jigsaw puzzles and most recently bingo. He was an avid reader of Louis L’Amour and a dedicated softball player who also enjoyed bowling. He especially loved traveling the world with Arleen. Most importantly, he and Arleen loved attending their grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He loved his family very much.

Wes is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arleen Turan of Manistique; daughters, Kathleen (L. Alan) Wood of Bismarck, N.D., Sally (Mark) Rubick of Manistique and Cheryl (Danny) Selling of Manistique; son, Gregory (Dana) Turan of Manistique; grandchildren, Andrew (Stacy) Wood, David (Rebecca) Wood, Timothy (Krystal) Wood, Bonnie (Mitch) Aho, Alexander (Kelsey) Rubick, Brandon (JoeyLynn) Selling, Matthew (Nickcole) Selling, Lisa (Troy Sumbera) Selling, Jared Turan, Tyler (Kylie Anthony) Turan, Jordan Turan; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Ryan, Grace, Hailey, Kendall, Reed, Ellie, Ayden, Karlee and Claire; siblings, Rhea (Melvin) Groleau of Rapid River, Ellsworth Turan of Caledonia, MS, Lois (Ric) Milkiewicz of Eloy, Ariz.,, Annette (Joseph) Jacques of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Michael (Susan) Turan of Rapid River; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Myrle.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon, on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the church with Rev. Father Ben Paris officiating.

Burial will be at the Hiawatha Township Cemetery in Hiawatha Township.

Memorial donations may directed to St. Francis de Sales Catholic School or to the Manistique Senior Center.
