Donald E. Zehren

FAYETTE — Donald E. Zehren, 92, of Fayette, Mich., passed away on April 1, 2018, at the Bishop Noa Apartments in Escanaba where he has resided for the past five years.

He was born July 4, 1925, in Pound, Wis., the son of Frank and Norma (Dunst) Zehren and lived in Coleman, Wis., before moving to Fayette as a child. He attended school in Fayette and was a graduate of the Garden High School.

During World War II, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater and was discharged as an electronic technicians mate second class.

On Oct. 14, 1950, he married the former Jacqueline B. Chayer in Garden. They made their home and raised their family on the Garden Peninsula.

Donald was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 41 years and served as the postmaster in Fayette and Garden.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden and the American Legion Post 545 of Garden. He enjoyed being a journeyman electrician, repairing radios and televisions on the side, and often volunteering his time and skills. He also loved to repair motors of all kinds: dishwashers, clothes dryers, washing machines, etc. He and Jackie and the family enjoyed travel throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and Don especially enjoyed anything outdoors.

Donald is survived by his wife, Jacqueline B. Zehren of Escanaba; daughters, Marcia (Stan) Hutjens of Green Bay, Wis., and Paula (Ron) Caldwell of Pulaski, Wis.; grandchildren, Jacob Caldwell and Jessica Caldwell; sister, Eunice Peterson of Manistique; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Eugene Zehren; his son, Timothy Zehren; and his brother, Gregory Zehren.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, on Wednesday, April 4, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon at the church with Father Mariusz Sierhart officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. John’s Hall. Burial will be in the New Garden Cemetery.
