Family, authorities seek volunteers for search of missing Alger County woman

A ground search will be conducted Saturday for missing Alger County woman, Starla Goings.

ALGER COUNTY– Volunteers are needed for an upcoming search for Starla Goings, a 65-year-old Munising woman who disappeared August 2025 in a case investigators say may involve foul play.

The ground search will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Au Train Fire Station, located at the intersection of 16 Mile Lake Rd and Crossover Road.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating the search alongside Nick Livermore, Goings’ son, and Steffanie Goings-Rhen, Goings’ daughter.

Livermore noted that the public’s dogs, drones and children are not allowed at the search on Saturday as to not interfere with search efforts from law enforcement.

Volunteers will be searching the area near Goings’ home that she shared with her husband on Peninsula Point Road in Munising Township.

“From my understanding, the police believe that she is located within a certain radius of the house,” said Livermore.

Livermore is hoping the search will lead to answers for his missing mother, who was last seen Aug. 15.

“Ultimately, given it’s Mother’s Day weekend, I would love to be able to find her and bring her home, but just kind of hoping that we at least find something that leads us in the right direction to kind of figure out what happened,” Livermore said.

Alger County Sheriff deputies were notified of Goings’ disappearance the evening of Sunday, Aug. 17. Livermore stated his mother went to the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba that Friday.

Goings’ vehicle — a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan — was later found at the end of Peninsula Point Road.

While the Alger County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police have led the investigation into Goings’ disappearance, numerous other agencies have assisted at various times, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Just a few days after Goings was reported missing, searches were conducted near the Peninsula Point Road area with assistance from partner agencies, including the Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

In late October 2025, police suggested foul play may be involved in her disappearance.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a search warrant was executed on property located on Peninsula Point Road owned by Goings’ husband. The agency did not specify if anything was found.

Livermore stated his mother filed for a divorce from her husband in May 2025 — three months before she disappeared.

Goings is described as a white female, about 5 feet 4 inches in height and 160 pounds. She has short, white hair and brown eyes. Police are unaware what type of clothing she was wearing.

Police have asked that anyone who may have been in that area of rural Alger County around that time or who may have trail cameras set up in the area contact police if anything occurs to them or a camera reveals an unusual photo or video.
