ESCANABA — The Delta County Board on Tuesday approved Operation Green Light for Veterans in Delta County, which will encourage area residents to shine green lights at their homes and businesses from Tuesday, Nov. 4, to Tuesday, Nov. 11, in support of veterans.
Operation Green Light was brought to the council by Delta County Veterans Affairs Director David Dziewior, who is an accredited member of the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
Operation Green Light for Veterans is a nationwide organization run by the National Association of Counties and the NACVSO. Both organizations will celebrate the fifth anniversary of Operation Green Light this Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has also participated by shining green lights on various VA facilities and medical centers.
Dziewior stated he is working with county maintenance to focus on placing transparent green plexiglass pieces over various overhead lights shining the walkways outside of buildings and the lights outside the Delta County Courthouse, 310 Ludington St. He also wants green solar lights on stakes placed in various locations outside the courthouse and the Veteran Service Office, 2840 College Ave.
Dziewior plans to coordinate with the Delta County Airport on its participation in Operation Green Light as well. He also noted he switches his own white porch lights to green bulbs for Operation Green Light.
“It’s a very simple and visible way for residents, businesses and the local government to say to the veterans that we see you and thank you for your service. By agreeing to this proclamation or making it a resolution, what we’re doing is Delta County is going to join and expand the nationwide effort to thank our veterans and show our appreciation,” he said.
In other business, the board:
— Approved the Hard Cap cost-sharing model rather than the 80%-20% cost-sharing model regarding Publicly Funded Health Insurance. The Hard Cap allows county employees to opt for insurance at no cost to themselves, while the 80%-20% leaves the employee responsible for paying 20% of their remaining medical balance.
– Appointed Emily DeSalvo, Delta County administrator, and reappointed Larry Johnson to the Building Authority.
– Reappointed John Myers and Patty Woerpel to the Board of Canvassers. The Delta County Democratic Party nominated Myers to represent them on the Board of Canvassers for his expiring term as well as proposed candidates Dan Young and John McMahon. The Delta County Republication Party nominated Woerpel to represent them on the Board of Canvassers for her expiring term as well as proposed candidates Vicki Veasey and Lisa Pieczynski.
– Instructed DeSalvo to discuss the contract of attorney Scott Graham with legal counsel. Graham reportedly stopped communicating with the county after being asked to turn over his files related to an investigation of the Delta County Airport, and the county voted to terminate his contract in June. County officials then notified Graham of the contract termination and provided 60 days for Graham to produce the files but have yet to receive a response.
