Woman accused in stabbing granted competency exam

ESCANABA – A woman arrested after a stabbing Aug. 11 in Escanaba has been granted a competency exam.
Crystalyn Dixie Knuth and her attorney, Jennifer J. France, appeared via Zoom on Wednesday in the Delta County District Court before Judge Steve Parks, who ordered the evaluation through the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Saline, Michigan.
Knuth faces a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation. She is accused of being involved in a stabbing that occurred about 7:30 a.m. Aug. 11. in Fairview Estates, 1401 N. 23rd St. in Escanaba.
Escanaba Public Safety officers found the victim with numerous stabbing wounds at a neighbor’s residence. The victim was immediately transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The victim’s name or gender has not been released.
Knuth reportedly had left the site in a blue SUV but turned herself in to Escanaba Public Safety on Aug. 11 while officers were still at the Fairview Estates residence. She has remained in custody since that time.
