Wilson man pleads guilty to drug charge
ESCANABA – A Wilson man pleaded guilty to one count of attempted possession of analogues in district court on Thursday.
Colton Troy Brunette, 24, of Wilson, was in Delta County District Court before Judge Steven Parks for a preliminary examination for a charge of attempted possession of analogues.
Brunette was initially charged with possession of a controlled substance – ketamine, a two-year felony.
The charge stems from an interaction between Brunette and Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers in a public parking lot in Escanaba on June 6.
During the interaction, troopers located ketamine in the driver’s side door of Brunette’s car.
Brunette’s attorney, Trenton Stupak and Delta County Prosecutor Lauren Wickman came to a plea agreement where Brunette would plead guilty to a lesser charge of attempted possession of analogues.
Brunette was previously sentenced this week in circuit court under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA), and will maintain his HYTA status regardless of the guilty plea in district court as a part of the plea agreement between the defense and the prosecution.
Parks explained the lesser charge is a misdemeanor, with a potential sentence of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Stupak requested a slight modification to the calling and testing schedule so that Brunette could attend a family member’s graduation downstate with his parents.
The prosecution agreed, provided that the days Brunette would be traveling were specified, and that he would undergo testing both before departure and upon return.
Brunette will be back in district court in the near future for his sentencing.
The court, prosecution and the defense are working to finalize a sentencing date.
