MPS: Fatal shooting in Harris appears to be self-defense

HARRIS TOWNSHIP — One man is dead from what authorities said appears to be a shooting in self-defense early Thursday in Menominee County.

At about 12:19 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post were called to a residence on County Road 551 in Harris Township, where a 34-year-old Wilson man had been shot. Despite troopers and EMS personnel attempting life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead on site, according to a MSP news release.

The preliminary investigation indicates the man was involved in a physical assault with his domestic partner at the residence before the shooting. The man then assaulted another person in the home with a knife and was shot in what appears to be self-defense, a second news release states.

No information was provided on whether either of the other two people involved were injured in the incident.

MSP Marquette Crime Lab assisted with processing the site for evidence. A MSP crime victim advocate from the Iron Mountain Post has been made available to help support those involved. MSP troopers and detectives are continuing to work to ensure the investigation is thorough and complete.

The incident will be submitted for review by Menominee County prosecutor once the investigation is finalized, the MSP states in the news release. Names of those involved are not being released out of respect for the families’ privacy.

MSP was assisted by Hannahville Tribal Police, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, Rampart EMS and D&D Dog Dynamics.

Starting at $3.50/week.
