UP jobless rate at 6.6% in June
IRON MOUNTAIN — Unemployment levels were mostly unchanged in the Upper Peninsula in June as the number of jobless workers stayed at an estimated 9,600, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
The U.P.’s not seasonally adjusted jobless rate of 6.6% in June was down a tick from a rate of 6.7% in May. A year ago, the rate was 6.1%.
The size of the region’s civilian workforce was pegged at 144,200 in June — the same as a year ago but up by 800 workers over the month. The number of jobless, meanwhile, rose by 800 from a year ago.
Statewide, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate decreased by one-tenth of a percentage point over the month to 5.3% in June.
“Michigan’s unemployment rate declined for the second consecutive month in June, a sign of labor market stabilization during the second quarter,” said Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics. The quarterly jobless rate was unchanged between the first and second quarter of 2025, remaining at 5.4%, he said.
The national jobless rate fell by one-tenth of a percentage point over the month to 4.1%. The national rate was unchanged from a year ago, while Michigan’s rate rose by six-tenths of a percentage point.
Over the year, Michigan manufacturing jobs fell by 13,000, a drop of 2.2%. Construction was up by 11,000 jobs for a gain of 5.6%.
The largest over-the-year numerical industry gains occurred in private education and health services, up by 22,000 jobs, an increase of 3%.

Forty-six of Michigan’s 83 counties exhibited unemployment rate advances over the month. Dickinson and Iron were among the 37 that did not. Dickinson was one of just nine Michigan counties to show a jobless rate decline over the year.
Mackinac County’s jobless rate of 4.3% was the lowest in the U.P. in June, followed by Menominee County at 5.4%. Ontonagon County had the highest rate in the region at 8.4%.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Florence County’s not seasonally jobless rate of 3.4% in June was down from 3.8% in May and 4.5% a year ago. Marinette County’s jobless rate of 3.8% in June compared with rates of 4% in May and 4.1% in June 2024.
