Car show coming to Rapid River Saturday

R. R. Branstrom | Daily Press During the most recent Muscle on Main in Escanaba, onlookers are entertained as Tom Demeuse of Perkins shows off a massive engine he built. Another car show is happening this Saturday in Rapid River.

RAPID RIVER — The 16th annual Rapid River car and motor show will be held this weekend, Saturday, Aug. 2.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, rat rods and hot rods are welcome to attend and register at Shope’s Restoration Shop (10479 S. Main St., next to Rapid River Hardware) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In the past, the show has been held at Masonville Township Recreation Area, but because of increased fees at the park, this year it’ll be downtown along South Main Street.

Five awards will be given for a handful of categories: farthest traveled; oldest vehicle; best rat rod or hot rod; diamond in the rough; and a memorial in honor of Jim Kennedy, who had been been involved in the formation of the car show years ago. Prizes for each of the five winners are both a trophy and a knife donated by Rapid River Knifeworks. Show organizers and volunteers will be the judges.

Other miscellaneous prizes that have been collected will be included in a silent auction and/or given away.

One donor made a monetary contribution that will help provide lunch from the Rapid River Pub and Swallow Inn. Both locations will be collecting donations during the car show for the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight.

As of noon on Wednesday, weather for Saturday was predicted to be sunny until mid-afternoon, with a high near 82 degrees, becoming partly cloudy later in the day.

Starting at $3.50/week.
