Voters go to the polls in Menominee County primary election

MENOMINEE — Menominee County voters decided a number of political races and millages in Tuesday’s primary election. They include:

MENOMINEE COUNTY SHERIFF

Voters across Menominee County who chose to vote on the Republican Ballot selected Darin Kudwa as the Republican nominee for sheriff. Kudwa received 1,826 votes (52.38 %) to Joseph Grinsteiner’s 1,660 (47.62 %).

Kudwa will go on to face Democrat and incumbent Michael T. Holmes in the general election

MENOMINEE COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 4

For District 4, Donald Park, bested incumbent Larry Schei with 242 (64.02%) votes to Schei’s 136 (35.98 %) votes in the Republican primary. Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Schei will be unopposed in November.

MEYER TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR

Republican voters chose Chad Knodl over incumbent Raymond Chester Gurgall for the supervisor position in Meyer. Knodl received 166 (66.94 %) votes to best Gurgall’s 82 (33.06 %). Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Knodl will be unopposed in November.

MEYER TOWNSHIP TREASURER

Republican voters chose Maxine Gatien For the treasurer position in Meyer. Gatien received 125 (51.22 %) to best Carol Arnold who received 119 votes (48.77 %). Because there are no Democrats running for the seat Gatien will be unopposed in November.

MELLEN TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE

Republican voters chose to elect incumbent Francis J. Corey and newcomer Tim Starzynski for the two trustee positions in Mellen. Corey received 100 votes (29.06 %) and Starzynski received 154 votes (44.77 %). Bonnie J. Philipps did not secure a seat, receiving 90 votes (26.16 %). Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Corey and Starzynski will be unopposed in November.

LAKE TOWNSHIP TREASURER

Republican voters chose Barbara J. Peterson for the treasurer position in Lake. B. Peterson received 67 votes (47.90 %) while incumbent Charlene Hunter Peterson and challenger Warren Suchovsky received 36 votes (25.71 %) and 37 (26.42 %) votes, respectively. Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, B. Peterson will be unopposed in November.

CEDARVILLE TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE

Republican voters chose to reelect incumbents David M. Buechler and Bill Wotruba for the two trustee positions in Cedarville. Buechler and Wotruba were able to beat out challenger John J. Slavick. Buechler received 51 votes (43.22%), Wotruba got the second most with 47 votes (39.83 %) and Slavick did not secure a seat, receiving 20 (16.94 %) votes. Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Buechler and Wotruba will be unopposed in November.

NADEAU TOWNSHIP CLERK

Republican voters chose Nick Kasbohm for the clerk position in Nadeau. Kasbohm edged out Julie L. Thiry with 121 votes (58.77 %) to Thiry’s 85 votes (41.30 %) votes. Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Kasbohm will be unopposed in November.

NADEAU TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR

Republican voters chose Lyle Gearhart for the supervisor position in Nadeau. Gearhart beat (Lyle Casey Desotell with 146 (66.40%) votes to Desotell’s 74 votes (33.66 %). Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Gearhart will be unopposed in November.

MENOMINEE COUNTY 911 AND CENTRAL DISPATCH MILLAGE

Menominee County voters approved a renewal of a levy of up to .6152 mills for five years (2025 to 2029) for the purpose of continuing funding for the Menominee County 911 and Central Dispatch. 3,596 votes (67.73 %) were in favor of the levy with 1,713 votes (32.27 %) against it.

The millage will raise an estimated $572,407 in the first year.

MENOMINEE COUNTY LIBRARY MILLAGE

Menominee County voters approved a renewal of a levy of up to .3692 mills for five years (2025 to 2029) for the purpose of continuing funding for the Menominee Library System. 3,062 votes (57.99 %) were in favor of the levy with 2,218 (42.00 %) votes against it.

The millage will raise an estimated $343,518 in the first year.

MENOMINEE COUNTY ROAD MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR MILLAGE

Menominee County voters approved a renewal of a levy of up to 1.500 mills for five years (2024 to 2028) for the purpose of funding local and primary road and bridge maintenance and repair in townships, City of Menominee, City of Stephenson, Village of Powers, Village of Carney and Village of Daggett.

2,701 votes (50.95%) were in favor of the levy with 2,600 votes (49.04 %) against it.

The millage will raise an estimated $1,395,660 in the first year. The millage revenues will be disbursed to the Menominee County Road Commission as well as the townships, cities and villages.

STEPHENSON AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINKING FUND MILLAGE

Residents in the townships of Cedarville, Daggett, Holmes, Ingallston, Lake, Mellen, Menominee and the City of Stephenson approved a continuation of a levy for the building and site sinking fund millage of .9954 for three years (2025-2027) for school building improvements.

698 votes (53.99 %) were in favor of the levy with 597 votes (46.10 %) against it.

The millage will raise an estimated $307,008.

NORTH CENTRAL AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINKING FUND MILLAGE

Residents in the Townships of Gourley, Harris, Meyer and Spalding rejected a levy of three mills for four years (2024 to 2027) to create a sinking fund for school facility improvements.

439 votes (53.47 %) were opposed to the levy with 382 votes (46.53 %) supporting it.

DAGGET TOWNSHIP ROAD MAINTENANCE MILLAGE

Residents in the Township of Daggett approved an increase of up to two mills for five years (2025 to 2029) for road maintenance and improvements with the Menominee County Road Commission.

98 votes (57.31 %) were in favor of the increase with 73 votes (42.69%) against it.

The millage will raise an estimated $56,000 in the first year.

SPALDING TOWNSHIP FIRE MILLAGE RENEWAL

Residents in the Township of Spalding approved a renewal and increase of the current .9971 millage to 1 mill for six years (2026 to 2031) for fire department operating purposes and equipment for the Spalding Township Fire Department.

286 votes (66.66 %) were in favor of the renewal/increase with 143 votes (33.33%) against it.

SPALDING TOWNSHIP FIRE TRUCK AND EQUIPMENT MILLAGE

Residents in the Township of Spalding approved increase of up to 1.00 mill for 10 years (2025 to 2034) for purchasing and equipping a new fire truck and equipment for the Spalding Township Fire Department. 221 votes (51.76 %) were in favor of the increase with 206 votes (48.24 %) against it.
