Friendly ghost walk brings Delta County’s past alive
ESCANABA — A guided historical walk through a local cemetery kicked off this week and continues this weekend. Playing Dead: A Cemetery Walk with Players de Noc is back in Escanaba at the Lakeview Cemetery. Written by local writers, Andrew Jones, Katherine LeDuc, and Lori Rose, this is a great chance to enjoy some local history as told by the folks who made it. The group already has one slate of shows under their belts and they will be back in action on July 19 and 20. Tours start at 7 p.m. and depart every 10 minutes, the last tour leaves at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase online at playersdenoc.org, the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center or at the Lakeview Cemetery entrance starting 15 minutes before the first tour.
The event is spearheaded by Director Katherine LeDuc, who also plays the ghost of Mary Terry, the first stop on the tour. From there, guests will be guided through the cemetery to hear stories from the ghosts including Ole Erickson, Michael Fry and Annie Seavey to name a few. The entire tour takes roughly an hour.
The idea of a guided cemetery walk came up back in 2020 during pandemic lockdowns as a way to safely practice theatre.
“We were looking for ways to do theatre outdoors due to restrictions on being inside in groups. This also enabled us to tap into our local writers, including Andrew Jones who has won awards for theatrical writing, as well as teach about Delta County’s amazing history,” said Players de Noc Marketing Director Sam Komay.
Tickets are still available for the event at Lakeview Cemetery, which is located at 2110 3rd Avenue South in Escanaba.
