Walk aims to raise awareness of child abuse

ESCANABA — The Delta Regional Child Advocacy Center (DRCAC) is holding a walk this Sunday to raise awareness for child abuse prevention and a vigil for children who have lost their lives due to abuse and neglect.

The DRCAC is made to be a safe space for children to share their stories of abuse and neglect in a compassionate, kid-first environment. The nonprofit’s mission also includes the provision of advocacy for those who need it, along with education around the subject and moving forward.

On Sunday, April 21, the event, called “Lighting the Path,” will begin in Ludington Park at the Karas Bandshell at 5:30 p.m. and go until 6:30.

The event is free, but donations may be made to the DRCAC. The organization covers Alger, Delta, Menominee and Schoolcraft Counties.

To add to the vigil the name of a child whose life has been lost to abuse, people may reach out to Sarah at ssorensen@deltaregionalcac.org or 906-789-5186 ext. 3.

The DRCAC operates at 2820 College Age. in Escanaba. More information on their goals and how to help may be found by visiting their website at deltaregionalcac.org or by calling 906-789-5186.

If anyone suspects a case of abuse or neglect, whether of a child or an adult, they should contact the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Centralized Intake at 855-444-3911.
