Teen charged in Esky carjacking

ESCANABA — An Escanaba teen was arrested Tuesday after allegedly committing a carjacking, crashing the vehicle into a power pole and fleeing to Aronson Island.

At 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, Escanaba Public Safety was told to be on the lookout for a vehicle involved in an accident on South 7th Street near 5th Avenue South. Delta County Central Dispatch advised officers the vehicle had struck a power pole and took off from the scene.

While en route to the scene of the crash, officers learned the vehicle had been stolen from that area and had been seen in Ludington Park. Because only a short time had passed, Public Safety closed off the park and subsequently located the vehicle. The 18-year-old male suspect was located near the beach house on Aronson Island.

An investigation revealed the owner of the vehicle had sustained injuries during the theft. The teen was taken into custody for carjacking and was lodged at the Delta County Jail pending arraignment.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by central dispatch, Michigan State Police and the DNR.

Starting at $3.50/week.
