Preparations underway for Memorial Day

Ceremonies are scheduled throughout the area Memorial Day. They include:

ESCANABA

The Delta County Veteran Council will hold memorial services on Memorial Day, May 30. The Veteran Council along with Amvets Post 123, Escanaba, will start at Holy Cross Cemetery at 9 a.m. They will have a service at Lakeview Cemetery at 9:20 a.m. A ceremony will be held at the Veteran Memorial in Ludington Park at 9:40 a.m. followed by a service on the Aronson Island Bridge in the Ludington Park at 10 a.m. The service at 11 a.m. at The Gardens of Rest Cemetery will have seating for all who attend. The program will include the National Anthem, Introduction of Veterans Organizations, Honored Guest Speech, Ringing of the Bell, Rifle Salute, Playing of Taps, and Bagpipes Player. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

GLADSTONE

American Legion Post 71 of Gladstone will be presenting Memorial Day ceremonies at Fernwood Cemetery. Flag Ceremony 10 a.m. and Memorial Day Ceremony 11 a.m. On Friday, May 27 at 9 a.m. everyone is welcome to put flags up for the veterans at the Fernwood Cemetery.

HERMANSVILLE

Volunteers are needed to put up the Avenue of Flags in the Hermansville Cemetery on Thursday, May 26 at 5 p.m. The Memorial Day program by Floriano-Stecker-Kelly Post 340 American Legion, Hermansville is Monday, May 30, at 5 a.m. – Flag Raising Half Mast-Riverside and Meyer Township Cemetery; 8 a.m. -Legion, Auxiliary, VVA, Amvets members meet at post club rooms; 9 a.m. – Riverside Cemetery, Faithorn, 9:30 a.m. – Menominee River, Faithorn; 10:30 a.m. – Hermansville Lake; 10:45 a.m. – Veteran’s Memorial Marker; 11:15 a.m. – Meyer Township Cemetery. Lunch will be served at the Legion Club rooms by the Ladies Auxiliary, Post 340 following the service at Meyer Township Cemetery. Coffee/brunch will be served at the Faithorn Town Hall after Menominee River Service. Grace Bond Murray is Officer of the Day.

RAPID RIVER

Walter W. Cole Post 301 Rapid River will be presenting Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 30, at the following cemeteries: Ogontz – 8 a.m.; Isabelle/Moss Lake – 8:40 a.m.; Nahma/Vet Memorial – 9:10 a.m. Stonington Lakewood – 10:10 a.m. and Rapid River – 11:15 a.m.

BARK RIVER

American Legion Post 438 will conduct ceremonies at the Perronville Cemetery at 9 a.m., the Schaffer Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., the West Ford River Cemetery at 10 a.m., South Ford River Cemetery at 10:40 a.m. and the Bark River Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.

WATSON

Escanaba River Post 115 of the American Legion will hold services Monday, May 30, at Watson Cemetery at 9 a.m.

NORTHLAND

Escanaba River Post 115 of the American Legion will hold services on Monday, May 30, at Northland Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

FLAT ROCK

Escanaba River Post 115 of the American Legion will hold services at Fernwood Cemetery at 11 a.m.

PERKINS

On Monday, May 30, Post 540 will be doing a service at the St. Nicholas cemetery at 10 a.m. and a service at the Perkins cemetery at 11 a.m.

GARDEN

American Legion Post 545 will conduct ceremonies as follows: Sac Bay Cemetery 9 a.m., Hinks Cemetery 9:30 a.m., Old Garden Cemetery 10 a.m., Kates Bay Cemetery 10:30 a.m. and New Garden Cemetery 11 a.m.

ROCK

American Legion Post 559 and Auxiliary Unit 559 will conduct Memorial Day ceremonies at the Rock Cemetery at 10 a.m.

BARK RIVER

The Bark River Legion and Auxiliary from the Rheaume-Knauf Post 438 will conduct Memorial Day services at the following cemeteries on Monday, May 30, (all times are EST): – Perronville at 9 a.m. – Schaffer at 9:30 a.m. – West Ford River at 10 a.m. – South Ford River at 10:45 a.m. – Bark River at 11:30 a.m.

The roll call of interred veterans and auxiliary members will be read at each cemetery, prayers will be offered by chaplains, the Pledge of Allegiance will be recited by all in attendance, and a 21 gun salute will be fired.

A short program will be held at the Bark River Cemetery with the Boy Scouts and the Bark River-Harris Band also participating. The Poppy Girls will have poppies available for a donation. This year’s poppy girls are Olivia and Norah Veeser, granddaughters of Legion Commander Ken and Cecile Veeser. Poppies are to be worn commemorating veterans; all donations go to veteran’s programs.
