Man, dogs escape Manistique house fire

MANISTIQUE — A man and his dogs escaped a house fire in Manistique Thursday. The home, however, suffered major damage, according to Kenneth C. Golat, Manistique Public Safety Department director.

At 10:30 a.m., Manistique Public Safety and volunteer firefighters were called to a structure fire at 600 Michigan Avenue in Manistique. Upon arriving on scene, officers found there was one occupant of the home who had gotten out safely with his three dogs and the two-story wood frame home was filled with smoke.

Fire officers quickly determined the main source of the fire was in the basement, which was filled with 3 feet of water due to a burst pipe. Firefighters entered the basement and extinguished the fire in the northwest basement floor. Firefighters then entered the home and put out the fire in the first-floor kitchen wall area, just above the basement fire area.

The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in origin, and started in the wall behind the kitchen stove where the electrical outlet overheated igniting the wall and flooring. The home was occupied by David Cameron of Manistique and he was transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital by Manistique EMS for smoke inhalation. The dogs were not injured in the fire and were turned over to family for caretaking.

The home, which is owned by Darryl Lawrence of Manistique, received major fire damage to the northwest wall and basement area with moderate to heavy smoke damage throughout the structure. Fire officers cleared the scene at 12:10 p.m. and there were no other injuries. Firefighters received assistance at the scene from the Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers who provided traffic and crowd control.

Starting at $3.50/week.
