COVID cases continue to slow locally
ESCANABA — Local data Wednesday again had new area COVID-19 cases in single digits, with Delta County adding only six confirmed positives and Menominee County three in the past two days.
Neither county had a new death blamed on the virus, according to the Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Wednesday. Delta County also had three probable virus cases and Menominee County one probable since Monday.
The PHDM on Tuesday had Delta County at 7,849 confirmed positives, 2,048 probable cases and 153 deaths since the pandemic began. Menominee County has had 3,860 confirmed positives, 1,689 probables and 63 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.
At the state level, figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday indicated 71 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Monday: 16 in Marquette County; 15 in Chippewa County; eight in Delta County; six in Mackinac County; five in Houghton and Alger counties; four in Iron and Baraga counties; and two in Menominee, Dickinson, Luce and Gogebic counties. The state listed five more virus-related deaths for the region: Two each in Marquette and Chippewa counties, one in Houghton County.
Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 50,731 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 800 deaths.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 451 confirmed cases and 53 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 649 confirmed cases and 767 probable, eight confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 866 confirmed, 104 probable and 34 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 1,035 confirmed, 659 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,075 confirmed cases and 669 probable, 11 deaths and two probable; Mackinac County, 1,524 confirmed cases and 840 probable, 26 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,700 confirmed cases, 318 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,291 confirmed cases and 339 probable, 69 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,712 confirmed cases and 524 probable, 38 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,341 confirmed cases and 5,026 probable, and 80 deaths, 16 probable; Menominee County, 3,855 confirmed cases, 1,686 probable and 60 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,967 confirmed cases and 2,379 probable, 85 deaths and 21 probable; Houghton County, 6,623 confirmed cases, 1,075 probable, 78 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,840 confirmed cases and 2,042 probable, 129 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 11,802 confirmed cases, 3,021 probable and 111 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Wednesday had 2,105 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Monday, or an average of about 1,054 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 2,058,856. The state since Wednesday added 233 deaths attributed to the virus — including 207 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 32,050.
