Courtesy photos Artist Carol Irving has donated her hand-woven wall hanging to the Northern Lights YMCA in Escanaba. The wall hanging, “Our Community is a Tapestry” is now hanging in the board room in the new facility. Irving did her research and after speaking with Director Gary Nash about the close relationship with the Hannahville Community and the local YMCA, she decided to weave in some symbols from the Potawatomi people. She also used the core values of the YMCA; caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusion. Irving does most of her design work at the computer, printing off a “cartoon,” which is a pattern or template to guide the weaver at the loom. Multiple cones of yarn surround her as she weaves and decides on just the right colors to use. Irving gave a presentation including an interpretive sign, explaining the colors and symbols used in the weaving. Irving currently divides her time between her family, a working weaving studio, and an active retirement life.
