Suspect kills self during police chase

GULLIVER — An Illinois man sought for attempted homicide took his own life during a police chase in Schoolcraft County, according to Michigan State Police. Karl Lymas, 53, of the O’Fallon, Illinois area died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police chase.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., a be on the lookout advisory was issued by St. Louis, Missouri, law enforcement regarding a man they were looking for who was involved in the attempted homicide of his ex-wife earlier in the day. Information passed along from St. Louis police believed the wanted subject was going to attempt to cross into Canada via the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie.

A vehicle matching the description was observed by an off-duty Manistique Public Safety sergeant along US-2 near Duck Inn Road. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the area and a traffic stop was attempted, however the suspect vehicle would not stop. During the ensuing pursuit Lymas shot himself and then crashed in the

Gulliver area. He died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

Detectives from the Michigan State Police, Gladstone Post, responded to the scene and coordinated their investigation with detectives from St. Louis Missouri Police Department.

Troopers from the Manistique Outpost were assisted by Sault Tribal Police Dept., Manistique Public Safety, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department, and DNR officers in the attempt to locate Lymas.
