Fire at Bay College welding lab

Students wait as firefighters from Escanaba Public Safety secure the welding lab Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out at a welding station. Officers were dispatched to the building on Danforth Road shortly after 4 p.m. on a report of fire coming from inside the welding and shipping receiving building. Eighteen students and two instructors were evacuated safely from the building. The building’s automatic sprinkler system had already activated by the time firefighters responded to the scene. When officers arrived, attack lines were deployed and officers entered the building. It was determined the filter system for one of the welding stations had caught fire. No injuries were reported, but the building sustained smoke and water damage. Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by DTE Energy, Escanaba City Electric and Delta County Central Dispatch.
