Delta County virus cases show spike
ESCANABA — COVID-19 numbers continue to climb in Delta County with 30 new confirmed positives since Monday, while neighboring Menominee County now shows a spike in virus activity as well at 13 new cases, according to local health data.
Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties on Wednesday also added 17 probable cases both in Delta and Menominee counties. The PHDM revealed Thursday the delta variant had been detected in Delta County.
The PHDM website Wednesday had Delta County at 3,471 confirmed positives, 748 probable cases and 94 deaths. Menominee County has had 1,847 confirmed positives, 373 probable and 40 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.
At the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday listed 59 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Monday:
20 in Delta County; 10 in Menominee County; six in Schoolcraft and Gogebic counties; four in Houghton and Chippewa counties; two in Ontonagon and Mackinac counties; and one each in Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Luce and Baraga counties.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 20,527 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 446 deaths.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 230 confirmed cases and 258 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 324 confirmed, 197 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 363 confirmed cases and 88 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 427 confirmed, 63 probable and 21 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 468 confirmed cases and 258 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 704 confirmed cases, 131 probable and 39 deaths; Iron County, 1,010 confirmed cases and 73 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,112 confirmed cases and 371 probable, 24 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,141 confirmed cases and 1,449 probable, and 29 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,841 confirmed cases, 367 probable and 41 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,446 confirmed cases and 362 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,576 confirmed cases, 610 probable, 35 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,456 confirmed cases and 743 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,287 confirmed cases, 840 probable and 64 deaths, one probable. State figures are updated regularly but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Wednesday had 2,786 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan since Monday, or an average of 1,393 per day for the two days, for a total to date of 916,006. The state Wednesday added 24 deaths attributed to the virus — including 12 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 19,982.
The state in July began posting new COVID data only twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, when the level of virus activity slowed. With cases climbing again, updates will be provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting this week.
