Munising newspaper closing after 125 years

MUNISING (AP) — After 125 years, a weekly newspaper in Munising is preparing its final edition. The Munising News will stop publishing after Wednesday. Owners Willie and Nancy Peterson also are ending the Alger County Shopper.

Willie Peterson said they can’t find enough employees.

“We’re doing well, OK? But it takes eight people,” Peterson told The Mining Journal. “At the end of March, I have three. … I need graphics people. I need writers. I need sales people. It’s the whole gamut.”

He said enhanced unemployment benefits during the pandemic have hurt recruiting.

Peterson said residents in Munising and Alger County will miss the newspaper.

“Citizens won’t know when government meetings are. It was nice to be able to pick up the paper and find that,” he said.

Starting at $4.00/week.
