Woman dies after near drowning at U.P. beach

MARQUETTE TWP. — A Kentucky woman who nearly drowned Thursday while snorkeling in Marquette Township has died.

At approximately 2:50 p.m. Thursday, troopers from the Negaunee Post of the Michigan State Police were dispatched to a report of a missing swimmer at Little Presque Isle Beach. Upon arrival, troopers learned from witnesses that Yookyung Lee-Mazzoni, a 42-year-old woman from Lexington, Ky., was snorkeling with her family when she went underwater and did not return to the surface. Witnesses reported the woman was underwater for approximately five minutes before she was located by other beachgoers.

CPR was initiated by a nurse from Jackson in Lower Michigan before first responders arrived at the scene. Lee-Mazzoni was transported by UP Health EMS to UP Health Systems Marquette, where she as placed in intensive care. She was pronounced deceased early Friday morning.
