Schoolcraft County voters decide issues

MANISTIQUE — Many Schoolcraft County seats were uncontested in the primary election Tuesday. Just over 30% of Schoolcraft County registered voters chose to vote on two county millage renewals — A Tax Renewal for Operating the Schoolcraft County Veterans Service Office and The Veterans Relief Fund, and the Proposition for Millage Renewal for Library Services in Schoolcraft County. Inwood Township residents voted on two additional township millage proposals.

COUNTY VETERANS SERVICE AND RELIEF FUND PROPOSAL

Schoolcraft County voters chose to renew a tax for operating the Schoolcraft County Veterans Service Office and The Veterans Relief Fund.

The proposal, which was supported by 1,480 votes, will assess up to 0.2000 mills ($.20 per $1,000 of taxable value) on all property within the county for the next five years from 2021 to 2025, inclusively.

Seventy percent of votes cast in the election (1,809 ) were cast in favor of the proposal.

The revenue generated from the millage renewal will raise an estimated $70,668 during the first calendar year the millage is levied.

COUNTY LIBRARY SERVICES PROPOSITION

Voters also chose to renew a tax for Library Services in Schoolcraft County by renewing the millage in the primary election.

The county proposal, supported by 1,157 votes, will assess up to $0.30 mills ($.30 per $1,000 of taxable value) on all taxable property within Schoolcraft County for the next five years, 2021 through 2025.

Almost 55 percent of votes cast in the election (1,795 ) were cast in favor of the proposal.

The revenue generated from the millage renewal will raise an estimated $151,221 during the first calendar year the millage is levied.

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Schoolcraft County Commissioner of the 1st District is Democrat Alan Kilar who received 117 votes, 24.48%, while Democrat Craig Reiter received 48 votes.

County Commissioner 2nd District is Republican Allan Ott.

Republican Troy Bassett was a resolved write-in to the ballot and received 16 votes to become the County Commissioner of the 3rd District.

County Commissioner 4th District is Republican Paul Walker.

Republican Daniel Hoholik ran uncontested for County Commissioner of the 5th District.

INWOOD TOWNSHIP

Voters of Inwood Township had two additional millage proposals to decide during Tuesday’s primary election.

Inwood Township residents voted to continue supporting township operations by renewing a millage for the purpose of providing funds for fire protection and general operations of the township Tuesday.

The proposal, which was supported by 148 votes, will assess up to 1 mill ($1 per $1,000 of taxable value) on all taxable property within the township for the next 10 years from 2021 to 2030, inclusive.

Fifty-eight percent of votes cast in the election (228 total votes) were cast in favor of the proposal.

Revenue generated from the millage renewal will raise an estimated $43,038 in the first year the millage is levied.

During the primary election Schoolcraft County residents helped to decide the following outcomes.

In the race for District 1 of the U.S. House Democrat Dana Ferguson received the majority of the vote in Schoolcraft County with 465 votes against Linda O’Dell. Ferguson won the contest with 159 votes over O’Dell who earned 306 of the votes (14.54 %).

Republican Melody Wagner received the Republican nomination in Tuesday’s primary for the Michigan House of Representatives District 109 after receiving 461 votes against Matthew Goss’ 358 votes in Schoolcraft County. Wagner will compete against Democratic incumbent Sara Cambensy in November’s general election again.
