Area has wave of county, city building closures

ESCANABA — In response to the coronavirus pandemic, a number of city and county facilities have closed their doors to the public in the local area.

Delta County’s administration office issued a press release Tuesday announcing the closure of all county offices to the public, effective at the end of business that day.

“Delta County of Michigan is following the State of Michigan’s recommendations in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus and is taking measures to protect the overall public health of our citizens, families, and employees,” the press release stated.

Among the buildings and offices affected by the closures are the Delta County Courthouse (including the circuit, district and probate courts), the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, the Veteran’s Service Office and the Delta County Airport Administration Office. The airport itself will remain open; for up-to-date information on flights, find “Delta County Airport” on Facebook or call 906-786-4902.

Closure updates will be posted on deltacountymi.org.

In Schoolcraft County, Chairperson Craig Reiter announced all board and committee meetings were canceled for the rest of the month. The jail and courthouse offices were also closed to the public, effective at the end of business Tuesday until further notice.

While no visitation will be allowed at the jail, people will be admitted to the courthouse by appointment only. Appointments will only be made for people who have business that cannot be handled via mail, email or phone.

The circuit court, district court, probate court and Friend of the Court may have canceled or rescheduled court hearings.

“Please call each individual office to confirm your hearing and get instruction on how to proceed,” Reiter said.

Tuesday, the Menominee County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting to discuss strategies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Menominee County began limiting public access to the county courthouse. Those with essential business with county departments are asked to call ahead to make an appointment. People will be screened at the door; if they are ill or have a fever of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, they will be prohibited from entering the building. The order is set to remain in effect until April 5 at 11:59 p.m. unless otherwise directed.

Visitor access to the jail has been restricted, as well. Before visiting the jail for any business, people are asked to call 906-863-4441.

The Menominee County Library System, including the Stephenson and Hermansville libraries and the Bookmobile, will be closed to the public until March 30.

The Menominee County Annex will be closed for meetings, trainings, conferences and similar gatherings. It will remain open otherwise.

Along with these precautions, the county is declaring a local state of emergency in order to activate its virtual emergency operation center. This will allow for improved communication between government officials, health care officials and emergency services.

The Menominee County Board of Commissioners will meet as scheduled on Tuesday, March 24, at 5 p.m. at the courthouse. The meeting will be open to the public; however, the county asks anyone who is not feeling well to stay at home.

The Menominee Regional Airport will remain open for normal operations.

For specific questions on coronavirus-related changes, people are asked to contact the Menominee County department they have business with. General questions can be directed to Menominee County Administrator Jason Carviou at 906-863-9648 or JCarviou@menomineeco.com.In a press release Tuesday, Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan stated that Escanaba’s City Hall has been temporarily closed to visitors until early April. Currently, city hall is set to stay closed through at least April 5.

Members of city hall staff are still working to answer phones and accept payments at the drop box. Escanaba residents are asked to keep in-person interactions to a minimum and conduct business by other means.

“This situation is very fluid and this is not something any of us have ever experienced, so we thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” Jordan wrote in the press release.
