Gladstone schools get clean audit

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone School District received a clean audit report for the 2018-2019 school year. Brandy Olson, CPA, with Anderson, Tackman, and Company presented the audit report to the Gladstone Area Schools Board of Education during a regular school board meeting Monday.

“This year, as you heard earlier, you did receive an unmodified opinion,” Olson said of the results of the audit.

During her presentation, Olson noted the district’s general fund balance was down by about $264,000.

“Overall, not too bad, a little bit of a dip this year but can’t have positives every year,” she said.

The district’s general fund balance was listed at $715,757 at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. This marked a decrease from the beginning of the year, when the fund’s balance was recorded at $980,269.

The dip comes after an increase, as at the end of the 2017-2018 school year the balance was up $124,876.

Olson noted liabilities, which includes costs pertaining to retirement and other post-employment benefits (OPEB), were up this year.

She explained the district’s negative net position is mainly due to pension and OPEB.

In other business, the board:

– accepted the letter of intent to retire from Ardith Katarincic.

– approved the hire of Tom Gereau as the freshman boys basketball coach.

– accepted the letter of retirement from Tim Gereau.

– approved the hire of Eric Hansen as the assistant wrestling coach.

– tentatively scheduled the superintendent evaluation of Superintendent Jay Kulbertis at the December meeting.
