Meth lab discovered in Manistique, 2 charged

MANISTIQUE — Two Manistique residents were arrested on multiple felony drug charges after police found a functioning meth lab in a dumpster near a Manistique residence last Saturday.

At 5:05 p.m. on Feb. 25, Manistique Public Safety officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in progress on Deer Street. Upon arriving at the scene, the alleged male suspect had left the scene and the alleged female victim was still present. As they investigated, officers found a working portable methamphetamine lab in a dumpster near the residence.

Additional investigation led to the arrest of 306 Deer Street residents Michael Jacob Murray, 24, on multiple felony drug charges and domestic assault and Stacy Lynn Clauss, 31, on multiple felony drug charges. Both suspects were then lodged by Manistique Public Safety at the Schoolcraft County Jail. A seven-year-old child at the residence was taken into protective custody and was turned over to the Michigan Department of Human Services for shelter and support.

The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) responded to the scene to assist with additional investigation and to dispose of the active meth lab. Public Safety was also assisted by the Michigan State Police at the scene.

Investigators then forwarded a report on the incident to the Schoolcraft County Prosecutor for review. On Feb. 27, both Michael Murray and Stacey Clauss were arraigned in Schoolcraft County District Court.

Murray was charged with the following four offenses: operating a meth lab, a 20-year felony; delivery/manufacture of meth, a 20-year felony; soliciting another to obtain ephederine/pseudeophedrine, a 10-year felony, and use of a narcotic, a one-year misdemeanor.

Clauss was charged with the following four offenses: purchasing/possessing ephederine/pseudeophedrine to make meth, a five-year felony; accessory to a felony after the fact, a five-year felony; maintaining a drug house, a two-year high court misdemeanor; and use of a narcotic, a one-year misdemeanor.

Both suspects remain lodged in jail, each in lieu of a $50,000 cash or surety bond. They are scheduled to appear in district court on March 13.
