Bay College announces 2025 Outstanding Faculty
ESCANABA — Bay College announces the recipients of the 2025 Outstanding Faculty Awards, recognizing excellence in education, student advocacy, and dedication to the college’s mission. Each year, these prestigious awards are presented by students, colleagues, or community members to faculty members who exemplify a deep commitment to student success and professional excellence.
This year, Bay College is honored to recognize Tammra Houseman as the recipient of the Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Award. Tammra serves as the lead instructor for the Early Childhood Education program and brings more than 30 years of experience to her role. She earned a Master of Science in Early Childhood Studies from Walden University and Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Special Education Endorsement from Northern Michigan University.
Tammra is an active contributor to multiple Upper Peninsula Early Childhood Advisories and is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of educators and leaders in the field. Students describe her as exceptionally supportive, noting, “Tammra has gone above and beyond to help me with my classes. She provides detailed feedback and is always willing to support students in any way she can. She is sensitive to unique circumstances and understands that not every student learns the same way.”
Bay College also proudly recognizes two faculty members with the Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award:
Cassie Callahan is a Bay College alumna, having graduated from both the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree in Nursing programs before earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northern Michigan University. Cassie currently works as an ICU nurse at UPHS-Marquette. She brings diverse clinical experience to her teaching, including roles in emergency medicine, homecare, and long-term care. She has contributed to numerous patient safety initiatives and clinical policy development at UPHS-Marquette. A colleague noted, “Cassie is an excellent instructor, student advocate, and a tremendous representative of the nursing program. Her dedication to her students and the college is inspiring.”
Dr. David Hansen, a former Bay College student turned educator, is also honored with the Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award. Over the past decade, Dr. Hansen has taught a wide range of courses within the Arts and Letters division, including literature, English, communication, and theatre. His background in pop culture research enriches his teaching, and he is known for creating dynamic and engaging online learning experiences. A colleague shared, “Dr. Hansen’s expertise and passion are evident in every course he teaches. His integration of current research into classroom content makes learning relevant and impactful.”
Due to scheduling conflicts, Dr. Hansen’s award was accepted on his behalf by long-time friend and fellow faculty member Michael Klein.
Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes, concluded the ceremony with heartfelt congratulations, stating, “These faculty members represent the best of Bay College. Their dedication, innovation, and tireless commitment to students make our institution truly exceptional.”
