LWV donates books to libraries

ESCANABA — The League of Women Voters was founded by suffrage leaders 100 years ago to help American women exercise their new right to vote. The Delta County League is joining with other local Leagues across the country to celebrate this important milestone.

For 100 years, Leagues have registered voters, informed their communities on the issues, advocated in their legislatures, and helped shape their communities. The Delta County League is celebrating our history by donating books to the Escanaba Public Library and the Gladstone Public Library. Each library chose titles that complement their current collections. Please check out the following at the Escanaba Public Library. “Finish the Fight”, “Women Win the Vote: 19 for the 19th Amendment”, “The Woman’s Hour: Our Fight for the Right to Vote”, “Votes for Women: American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot”, “Deeds Not Words: Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage” and “100 Years of the Nineteenth Amendment: An Appraisal of Women’s Political Activism”. Gladstone Public Library chose the following: “The Only Woman in the Photo: Frances Perkins & Her New Deals for America”, “The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience”, “The Brave and Revolutionary Women Who Fought For the Right to Vote: Finish the Fight”, “Megan Smith: Women in Science & Technology”, “Elizabeth Blackwell: Women in Science & Technology”, “Women Who Launched the Computer Age”, “Shirley Chisholm”, “Mae Jemison”, “Katherine Johnson”, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg”, “The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight To Win the Vote”, “History Smashers: Women’s Right To Vote”.

These materials donated in memory of long-time member, Michelle Miller will serve to educate all ages about the role women played in our democracy. To be an informed voter on November 3, please go to Vote411.org and enter your personal address.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
