Remembering Darrell Bengry
ESCANABA — As part of a social gathering and fundraising event, the Delta County Democratic Party will in two weeks be remembering Darrell Bengry and acknowledging his over 60 years of commitment to the local community.
Bengry, a past educator and Delta County Commissioner, died in February.
As Bengry did not seek out attention and recognition during his life, this ceremony will not be a stand-alone activity but instead will take place in the middle of a larger event entitled “Celebrate Democrats: Past, Present and Future,” which will include ice cream with toppings bar and music by Drew Peterson.
Bengry’s work in the community as a “Capitol D Democrat” is a part of a proud history of Democratic values within Delta County and is part of a look at the “Past” portion of the event. A number of community members will speak about his work in the community. Some of Bengry’s activities included stumping for Bart Stupak and Dave Anthony, among others; calling voters; engaging the public on the streets; knocking on countless doors; and putting out dozens and dozens of signs.
In addition, he served 12 years as a Delta County Commissioner striving to improve life in the county for everyone, provided tireless support for local unions and was a Michigan Education Association (MEA) contract negotiator.
Bengry served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1953. In addition, Darrell was a long-time school teacher, coach, and mentor to many.
This event will be held at the Escanaba Marketplace on June 16. The entire event will run from about 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., with the portion dedicated to Darrell Bengry commencing around 3:00 p.m. This event is open to the public. Although the overall event itself is free, a $15 donation is suggested for anyone who would like to have some ice cream.
