Conservation District announces scholarships

MANISTIQUE — The Schoolcraft Conservation District (SCD) is offering scholarships to students and teachers. Two college scholarships are available, and scholarships to attend week-long camps are available for teachers and for high school students. Students must reside in Schoolcraft County to be eligible; teachers must have Schoolcraft County residents among their students.

Two $500 college scholarships are being offered to high school seniors. These scholarships are for students who will be pursuing a certificate, associate’s, or bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field in the fall of 2020. Applications are due March 16 and are available at Manistique and Big Bay de Noc High School offices. Applications can also be obtained by contacting the SCD.

Scholarships for teachers to attend the DNR’s Academy of Natural Resources in the summer of 2020 are also being offered. This week-long camp gives teachers knowledge and tools for incorporating more natural resource topics into their classrooms. Two sessions of this camp are available, July 12-17 in Roscommon and Aug. 2-7 in Alberta (near L’Anse). More information about the camps is available at michigan.gov/dnr/anr or through the SCD. Applications for the scholarships are available by contacting the SCD and are due March 1.

Two career camps are available to high school students. The Career Pathways Program will be held June 21- 25 in Roscommon, Mich. Sponsored by the MI DNR and hosted at the Ralph A. MacMullen Conference Center, this intensive camp is designed to give students a taste of the daily work performed by foresters, conservation officers, park rangers, and others in related fields. Applications are due March 15. The Natural Resources Careers Exploration Week will be held June 14-19 at Trees for Tomorrow in Eagle River, Wis. . Applications are due April 10. Schoolcraft County students who are accepted at either camp should contact the Conservation District to obtain a scholarship. Scholarships are paid directly to the camp.

More information about any of these camps and scholarships is available on the SCD website at www.schoolcraftcd.org or on Facebook @schoolcraftconservationdistrict or by contacting the SCD office at 341-8215.
