ESCANABA – Elementary students in the Escanaba schools have benefited from a program conducted by the Escanaba Elks Lodge.

A total of 528 dictionaries were presented to students through third grade at Escanaba and Holy Name schools. It is the 11th year of the program’s existence and approximately 5,400 dictionaries have been distributed by the Elks.

The program, according to dictionary project chairman Bill LaMarch, is run and funded by volunteers, who also provide pencils and Hot Wheel cars for the school’s treasure chests.

Because of the program’s wide support, the Escanaba Elks were eligible to obtain a gratitude grant from the Elks National Foundation which allows the club to support programs like this to assist the schools in helping prepare students with their scholastic studies.

The Elks members and auxiliary contributed 210 hours and more than 1,400 miles to complete the project that involved 10 schools.
