Police issue phone scam warning

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Safety Department is warning the public about a phone scam. It involves phone calls with an automated voice pretending to be from the Social Security Administration.

Officers said the Social Security Administration will not call to discuss your Social Security number — especially not using an automated voice requesting you to press a “number” to be routed elsewhere.

This type of scam seems to surface repeatedly around tax time.

Officers remind everyone to not give out or discuss personal information with anyone by telephone or online unless you initiated the contact and verified the recipient.
