Tourism: A key driver of jobs, income and growth

Minding Our Own Business

Robert Micheau

Tourism is not just an added benefit in Delta County; it is a pillar of the local economy. According to recently shared 2024 data from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, tourism supports 1,377 jobs here, or 7.3% of all employment. This makes Delta County the third-largest tourism employer in the Upper Peninsula, behind only Marquette and Mackinac counties. Those jobs translate into $44.8 million in wages and income, directly supporting local families and businesses.

Visitor spending reached $119 million in 2024, spread across lodging, dining, retail, recreation, and transportation. Lodging anchors the sector, but dollars also flow into restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries; retail stores; outdoor recreation from fishing charters to festivals; and transportation services. Importantly, this spending generated $12 million in state and local tax revenue, easing the burden on residents while reinvesting in our communities.

The ripple effect is wide reaching. A meal in a local restaurant supports regional farmers and distributors. A hotel stay provides paychecks for hospitality staff and maintenance crews. A fishing trip or boutique purchase circulates dollars that strengthen small businesses. Over the past five years, visitor spending in Delta County has grown steadily, rising from $92.8 million in 2021 to $119.1 million in 2024, a gain of nearly 30%.

For residents, this is more than an economic statistic. Tourism sustains the businesses, jobs, and services that locals rely on every day. It helps maintain public spaces, supports cultural traditions, and keeps our historic downtowns vibrant. Festivals, outdoor adventures, and community events not only bring visitors but also deepen local pride.

Equally important are the people behind the numbers. From hospitality staff and restaurant owners to artisans and event organizers, it is their work that gives Delta County its distinct character. Residents are also everyday ambassadors when they recommend trails, welcome festival-goers, or simply offer a friendly wave to visitors.

Looking ahead, the potential for growth is clear. With continued investment in recreation, infrastructure, and events, Delta County is well positioned to remain a destination of choice. Each new visitor brings not only spending power but also an opportunity for our community to shine.

As we celebrate tourism’s impact, we also celebrate the residents whose support and hospitality make it possible. Together, we are building not just a destination but a stronger Delta County, full of opportunity, connection, and pride.
