Column: Lunch with Michigan leaders

ESCANABA — If you’ve ever sat down to lunch at the U.P. State Fair, you know that food tastes better with a side of fresh air and good company. One luncheon during fair week is about more than just what’s on the plate ~ it’s about who’s at the table.

On August 14th, during the hustle and bustle of the fair, a gathering will take place to again welcome Michigan’s Lieutenant Governor, Garlin Gilchrist II, elected officials, and members of the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (or MAFE, for short). These are the folks who champion our state’s fairs and festivals and make sure that events like the U.P. State Fair continue to be successful in communities like ours.

Now, you might be thinking a luncheon with elected officials sounds kind of fancy. And sure, there might be a little formality involved. But at its heart, this event is about connection. It’s a chance to say thank you to the people who support Michigan’s fairs and a chance to remind them why that support matters.

The truth is, fairs aren’t just fun (though they’re certainly that too). They’re deeply woven into the fabric of our communities. They support local agriculture, provide experiences for youth, boost small businesses, and bring families and friends together. From young exhibitors showing their first calf to neighbors catching up over elephant ears, fairs are the kind of tradition that builds relationships.

But like anything worth preserving, they need champions. That’s where this luncheon comes in.

It’s a chance to sit down with decision-makers and talk face-to-face about what we’re seeing, what we need, and why their support is important. It’s not about politics, it’s about people.

So while this gathering may look like a polite meal under a big white tent, it’s really something more. It’s a reminder that when we invite people to the table (literally and figuratively) we all leave a little more connected and a little more informed.

If you’d like to reserve your seat at the table or learn more about this event, please contact the Delta County Chamber of Commerce by calling 906-786-2192, visiting www.deltami.org, or stopping by the Commerce Center at 1001 North Lincoln Road.

Here’s to good food, great conversation, and the timeless tradition of gathering at the U.P. State Fair.
